An additively separable representation in the Savage framework

چکیده

This paper proposes necessary and sufficient conditions for an additively separable representation of preferences in the Savage framework (where the objects of choice are acts: measurable functions from an infinite set of states to a potentially finite set of consequences). A preference relation over acts is represented by the integral over the subset of the product of the state space and the consequence space which corresponds to the act, where this integral is calculated with respect to an evaluation measure on this space. The result requires neither Savage’s P3 (monotonicity) nor his P4 (weak comparative probability). Nevertheless, the representation it provides is as useful as Savage’s for many economic applications. © 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. JEL classification: D81

Bayesianism Without Priors, Acts Without Consequences

A generalization of subjective expected utility is presented in which the primitives are a finite set of states of the world, a finite set of strategies available to the decision maker, and allocations of money. The model does not require explicit definitions of consequences (“states of the person”), nor does it rely on counterfactual preferences, nor does it emphasize the unique separation of ...

On the Separability of the Quasi Concave Closure of an Additively Separable Function

Let 2 be a binary relation on R’!+. The convexed relation 2 is defined by xky iff Vz[y~conv{w:w~z}]*[x~conv{w:w~z)] [see Hildenbrand (1974)]. Starr (1969), first formally presented this relation, which was used by him and by others in equilibrium analysis of markets with non-convex preference relations [see for example Shaked (1976)]. The question arises which properties of the unconvexed relat...

Discrete Choice Cannot Generate Demand That Is Additively Separable in Own Price

We show that in a unit demand discrete choice framework with at least three goods, demand cannot be additively separable in own price. This result sharpens the analogous result of Jaffe and Weyl (2010) in the case of linear demand and has implications for testing of the discrete choice assumption, out-of-sample predictions, and welfare analysis.

Additively Separable Representations on Non - convex

This paper proves sufficient conditions under which a completely separable order on non-convex sets can be represented by an additively separable function. The two major requirements are that indifference curves are connected and that intersections of the domain of the order with parallel-to-the-axes hyperplanes are connected. A generalized representation theorem for Harsanyi's ('impartial') observer

We provide an axiomatization of an additively separable social welfare function in the context of Harsanyi’s impartial observer theorem. To do this, we reformulate Harsanyi’s setting to make the lotteries over the identities the observer may assume independent of the social alternative.
